Lamar University announced another component to its football gameday experience on Monday, and provided its football coach with a $1 million new showpiece.

When Ray Woodard took over as head coach of the Lamar University football team almost two years ago, athletic director Billy Tubbs asked him what he needed.

"(Woodard) said he wanted the biggest scoreboard in Southeast Texas," Tubbs said.

Woodard's wish has been granted. The athletic department says the new scoreboard, a sketch of which was displayed by Lamar president Jimmy Simmons in a press conference Monday afternoon, is the biggest in the Southland Conference. The scoreboard for Provost Umphrey Stadium includes a video screen that is 50 feet by 25 feet and will show live action and instant replay.

For Education First Federal Credit Union, the exclusive sponsor of the scoreboard, the deal brings greater exposure.

The Cardinals' 2010 season opener is Sept. 4 against McNeese State in Lake Charles, La. The first home game in Provost Umphrey Stadium is Sept. 11 against Webber International.
